Jim Blackwood wasn’t a great golfer, but no one loved the game more than he did. That’s why his long-time golf buddies will host a golf tournament in his memory on August 31, with proceeds to support another passion of Jim’s, the Center for Practical Bioethics.
The first annual Blackwood Open will be held August 31 at the The Deuce at the National Golf Club. Cost is $100.00 a person ($400.00 per foursome), which includes green fees, cart, lunch, dinner, prizes, and refreshments. Individual registrations are welcome; teams will be assigned.
Registration and lunch is at 11 am, with tee off at noon.
The tournament will be played as a four person scramble, with hole-in-one prizes and other contests on the course.
Sponsorships are also being accepted; to become a sponsor, please contact Joe Landes at (785)727-0877.
The Blackwood Open actually originated years ago when Jim hosted a tournament just for fun. Over the years, even weeks before his death, Jim talked about re-starting the tournament to benefit the Center for Practical Bioethics, where his wife, Donna, has worked or volunteered for more than 20 years. In 2000, Donna received the Center’s highest award, the Vision to Action Award, in recognition of her many contributions.
To some it might seem strange to link golf and bioethics but maybe it’s not such a stretch. After all, Bobby Jones, one of the most famous golfers of all time, once said “Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball where it lies.”
Although Donna Blackwood has never been a golfer, with all that she had learned at the Center about advocating for a seriously ill loved one, she and her daughters were able to help Jim through the most challenging round of his life. And together they made the hole in one – Jim died in their home with family and friends surrounding him on June 2.
With Jim’s passing, his golf buddies, work associates, many friends and family want to relive the great fun of the old Blackwood Opens and join in benefiting the Center.
The Blackwood Open is for golfers of all skill levels (even those as bad as Jim) who would love the opportunity to play on one of Kansas City’s finest and most exclusive courses designed by Tom Watson.
