Summer Johnson, PhD

Dr. Summer Johnson joined the Center as the Director of Graduate Studies in February 2010. In her role, she has overall responsibility for Center's Certificate in Clinical Ethics and Health Policy.

In her brief time at the Center, Dr. Johnson has overseen the approval of the Center by the Kansas Board of Regents to become an institution of higher learning which was, according to the Regents, the fastest approval of a private institution in their history.

In addition Dr. Johnson is the Executive Editor of The American Journal of Bioethics family of journals, including The American Journal of Bioethics (AJOB), the top journal in all of bioethics, ethics, health law, and public health, AJOB Neuroscience and AJOB Primary Research.

Dr. Johnson is the author of blog.bioethics.net, the Editor's blog of The American Journal of BIoethics, and a contributor to www.bioethics.net, which serves more than 30 million readers every year with information about ethics in medicine and science. 

Dr. Johnson is a summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Indiana University, where she designed the university's bioethics major.  She is a former recipient of both a Fulbright and a Javits fellowship, and received her PhD in Bioethics & Health Policy from The Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health at 25. 

She has published extensively on public participation in bioethics and public policy, as well as public health ethics and ethics and nanomedicine.

Dr. Johnson has been nationally praised for creating the most innovative graduate education program online in medical ethics and her work with iTunes University, in fact, was cited in the May 20, 2008 issue of Nature as a key reason for the city of Albany New York's rise to #1 in New York and #11 nationally among the "most educated metropolitan areas."
