Mark Hoffman Discusses Big Data in Healthcare

Dr. Mark Hoffman joined the UMKC School of Medicine’s new Center for Health Insights as director and its Dept. of Biomedical and health Informatics and Dept of Pediatrics as associate professor in Aug. 2013 after 16 years as a VP at Cerner Corporation. He also serves as director of Translational Bioinformatics at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Here he explains what “big data” really means, its upsides and downsides, how they can be addressed, and his goals in using big data to accelerate research in healthcare and translate results into clinical practice.
